Ways to Decrease Stress in the Summer

Summer is often painted as the season of rest and relaxation, but let’s be honest—between travel plans, social obligations, and juggling kids’ schedules, stress can creep in fast. The good news? With a few mindful changes and intentional practices, summer can truly become a time of renewal.

Here are seven easy, effective ways to reduce stress and embrace more calm this season:

1. Unplug for a Few Hours Each Day

While summer often means more free time, it can also mean more screen time—and that constant digital buzz can silently drain you. Set aside a few hours each day to unplug from your phone, email, and social media. Try reading a book in the sun, journaling, or simply sitting outside and observing your surroundings.

2. Create a Loose Routine

When schedules are less structured, days can quickly feel chaotic. A flexible daily routine can bring grounding without rigidity. Consider setting simple anchors for your day like a morning walk, midday stretch, or winding down with herbal tea before bed.

3. Spend Time in Nature

Whether it’s a beach day, a hike, or just a picnic at the park, being in nature has been proven to lower cortisol levels and increase feelings of calm. Even 15 minutes outside can help reset your mind and body.

4. Keep Hydrated & Eat Light

Hot temperatures can sneakily contribute to irritability and fatigue. Drink plenty of water and opt for lighter meals filled with fruits, veggies, and whole grains. Think refreshing summer salads, smoothies, and hydrating snacks like watermelon or cucumber.

5. Practice Mindful Movement

Instead of intense workouts, embrace gentle, mindful movement. Try yoga on the patio, swimming, or evening walks. Movement releases endorphins, reduces anxiety, and helps your body regulate stress naturally.

6. Say “No” Without Guilt

Summer can come with a full social calendar—but remember, it’s okay to protect your peace. You don’t have to attend every barbecue, vacation, or event. Prioritize what feels restorative, and give yourself permission to rest.

7. Schedule Mini “Me-Time” Moments

You don’t need a full spa day to feel refreshed. Set aside 10–20 minutes daily just for you. Meditate, listen to your favorite music, take a bath, or do nothing at all. These small moments of intentional solitude can have a big impact on your mental clarity.

Final Thoughts

This summer, choose ease over hustle. Stress will always be part of life, but with mindful choices and a little planning, you can create more space for joy, rest, and connection. Let this be your reminder to slow down, breathe deeply, and soak in the season.
