Sometimes you want to be terrified. Other times, you want to laugh while someone is being chased by a monster. That’s where horror comedies shine.
These movies have become some of my favorite comfort watches because they perfectly balance creepy moments with hilarious ones. If you’re looking for a movie marathon that won’t have you sleeping with the lights on (well…mostly), here are my top five picks!
1. Ready or Not (2019) 🏹🩸
If I had to pick one horror comedy to recommend to almost anyone, it would be Ready or Not.
What starts as a bride’s wedding night quickly turns into a deadly game of hide-and-seek when she learns her new in-laws have a very unusual family tradition. The movie is suspenseful, hilarious, over-the-top, and packed with moments that made me laugh out loud.
Samara Weaving is incredible in this role, and watching Grace go from terrified bride to total badass is one of my favorite horror movie journeys.
Why I love it:
- Dark humor done perfectly
- A strong, unforgettable final girl
- Gorgeous gothic mansion setting
- Equal parts funny, thrilling, and bloody
- An ending I’ll never forget
2. Happy Death Day (2017) 🎂🔪
Think Groundhog Day…but make it horror.
A college student relives the day she’s murdered over and over until she figures out who her killer is. It’s funny, suspenseful, and surprisingly heartwarming.
Why I love it:
- Great mystery
- Funny without trying too hard
- A killer mask that’s instantly recognizable
- One of the most rewatchable horror films
3. Spree (2020) 🚗📱
Okay…I already know this probably isn’t going to make a lot of “Top 5 Horror Comedy” lists, but I couldn’t leave it off mine.
Spree follows a rideshare driver who’s desperate to become internet famous, and the results are equal parts hilarious, disturbing, and completely unhinged. The movie pokes fun at influencer culture and social media obsession while delivering plenty of suspense along the way.
Joe Keery absolutely steals the show. He somehow makes Kurt both incredibly awkward and genuinely terrifying, which is not an easy balance to pull off.
Why I love it:
- Dark, awkward humor
- A unique take on modern horror
- Joe Keery gives an unforgettable performance
- Satirical without feeling preachy
- Weird in all the best ways
It may not be everyone’s first choice, and I’m pretty sure you won’t see it on many “best horror comedy” lists…but that’s exactly why I love it. Sometimes the most underrated movies end up becoming your favorites. 🖤
4. The Cabin in the Woods (2012) 🏕️
The less you know going in, the better.
What seems like another cabin-in-the-woods slasher quickly becomes something completely unexpected. It’s smart, funny, weird, and one of the most creative horror movies ever made.
Why I love it:
- Brilliant plot twists
- Makes fun of horror clichés
- Incredible ending
- Gets better every time you watch it
5. Beetlejuice (1988) 🖤💚
Okay…is it spooky? Yes.
Is it hilarious? Absolutely.
This Tim Burton classic has been one of my favorites for years. It’s weird, charming, creepy, and endlessly entertaining. Michael Keaton’s performance is unforgettable, and the whole movie feels like Halloween wrapped up in a bow.

- Iconic characters
- The perfect mix of spooky and silly
- A must-watch every Halloween season

Horror doesn’t always have to be serious. Sometimes the best scary movies are the ones that have you laughing just as much as they make you jump.
These are my comfort horror comedies… the movies I can throw on anytime I want spooky vibes without feeling emotionally wrecked afterward.

Ready or Not and the sequel are in my top list too. They are so good! Beetlejuice is a classic, too. I’m so curious about Cabin in the Woods. I’m adding it to my watch list! As a teenager, I loved Scary Movie. I haven’t watched it since then so I’m not sure how it holds up. Do you like the silly B movies like Cocaine Bear? I love Zombeavers, Slotherhouse, and Velocipastor.
