Cute, Comfy & Work-Appropriate: My Favorite Relaxed Work Clothes

I have officially reached the point in my life where I refuse to be uncomfortable at work just for the sake of looking “professional.”

Give me stretchy pants. Give me flowy tops. Give me clothes that look cute enough for the office but don’t make me feel like I’m trapped in business attire all day.

Since becoming an academic advisor, I’ve been figuring out what my version of work style actually looks like. I want to look put together and professional, but I’m also walking around campus, sitting at my desk, meeting with students, and basically living in these clothes for eight hours. Comfort matters!

My favorite work outfits tend to fall somewhere between business casual and “I could absolutely wear this to Target afterward.” 😂

My work-clothes rule is pretty simple: if I can throw it on, add a couple of accessories, and immediately look like I tried harder than I actually did, I’m sold.

I don’t need to look like I’m heading into a corporate board meeting every day, but I also don’t want to look like I accidentally wandered into work on my way to the grocery store.

Listen, I am a BIG supporter of redefining business casual.

I want things that are easy to move in, easy to style, and, most importantly, don’t make me immediately want to change clothes the second I get home.

How I Make Relaxed Clothes Look More Work Appropriate

I’ve learned that you really don’t need an entire closet full of traditional “office clothes” to look put together.

A few little styling choices can completely change an outfit:

• Add simple jewelry.
• Choose a structured or cute handbag.
• Pair relaxed pants with a slightly nicer top.
• Add loafers, flats, boots, or clean sneakers, depending on your workplace.
• Tuck or half-tuck your shirt when it works with the outfit.
• Keep a cardigan or blazer in your office for an easy extra layer.

And honestly? Hair and makeup help too.

I’ve started enjoying getting ready for work so much more now that I’ve stopped trying to dress like some imaginary version of what I thought a professional woman was supposed to look like.

I can still wear clothes that feel like me.

At the end of the day, I think that’s what I’ve been loving most about figuring out my style lately.

I’m 38. I know what I like. I know what I don’t like. And spending eight hours in stiff pants that are digging into my stomach is firmly in the DO NOT LIKE category. 😂

I want comfortable.

I want to look put together without feeling like I’m wearing a costume.
