Showing Love During Grief

Grief is hard.
Grief sucks.
It’s a process – and it’s one we don’t want to go through.
Ever.

When my husband lost his father a month ago I wasn’t sure how to navigate with him… for him… really, just in general.
I’ve not lost a parent, how do I help my husband with losing his father?
It’s been over a month and I still don’t have an answer to this question… but I’ve learned a little bit in this process.

All I can say is if you’re dealing with a spouse who’s lost someone – just love them.
Love them so hard it hurts.

Be there.
Through every smile, every tear, every up and down.
Be there through it all.

Listen.
Don’t speak – just listen.
Sometimes the words won’t make sense, sometimes the words will break your heart.
Just listen.

Grief – I’ve learned, comes in many different forms.
It shows up when you least expect it and rears its ugly head when you’re not ready.
Is anyone ever ready for it?

I found this quote about grief when I was looking on Pinterest this morning and I realized I never looked at it like this – but it’s exactly right.

Your love, where do you put it?
It feels like it’s nowhere to go so it bursts out of you – be it with sadness or joy – but when you don’t know where to put your grief it can come in many different forms.
And you never know which form it will be.

Love your people.
Love them harder when they need it most.
My husband and I are a great team – we work together very well when it comes to life, but of course – we’re not perfect.
Right now I feel less than perfect when trying to help him, to protect him, to shield him from pain.
But really we’re all just floating around doing our best.
And that’s all we can do or ask for.

Grief sucks.
Loss sucks.
But it doesn’t have to suck in every single moment.
Show your love, feel your love.
And take each moment as it comes… one day at a time.

The sky looks different when you’ve got someone you love up there – so take a second to look… it’s worth it.

xoxo
