You’re a Real Funny One!

fun·ny

/ˈfənē/

adjective

adjective: funny; comparative adjective: funnier; superlative adjective: funniest

  1. 1. causing laughter or amusement; humorous.

I’ve always loved to laugh… and to make people laugh.
Which, if you know me you’re not surprised.

I grew up watching SNL and wanted to be Gilda Radner when I grew up.

I watched Steve Martin, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Dan Akroyd… so many other and thought wow, they really do know how to make people laugh.

But Gilda, I just loved her.
I thought she was hilarious. The way she made people laugh, I wanted that.
Not even to be famous, but to always bring joy to people?
How do I get that?

A few years ago when her documentary came out, Love, Gilda, I watched it in awe.
Everything she did – was just amazing.
Her life, her humor – it was like catching lightning in a bottle.
She was, and always will be my favorite.

Steve Martin and Martin Short were always favorites of mine as well.
And then you put them together, it’s comedy gold.
Getting to see them live was so wonderful. A dream come true.
I really wasn’t sure that was ever going to be an option, so when I got to go…
I just loved it.

The Steve Martin documentary is on Apple TV and I had been dying to watch it but didn’t have time.
I finally got the time – I sat down and watched both parts, really watching, to learn about what made Steve Martin… well, Steve Martin.

What I learned from watching this, and Love, Gilda, is that a lot of humor comes from sadness.
Anxiety.
Depression.
If you can laugh, and you can make other people laugh – it’s a win win for everyone.

“I was deeply unhappy, but I didn’t know it because I was so happy all the time.”

Steve Martin

What I liked about the Steve Martin documentary was that they talked about his rise, his fall, his will-I-won’t-I make it story.
His life, in all it’s good and bad, it was him.

For a public figure that EVERYONE knows he is a very private man.
He keeps his friends and family close.
He holds onto people that feel like sunshine.
He makes sure to bring joy to everyone he’s around.
…how can you not love that?
Aspire to be that.
It’s what I’ve always aspired to be…. thanks to him and many more.

So I think what I’m trying to say is, whatever you want to do that makes you happy, just go out and do it.
Be funny.
Do what you want.
and just have an awesome time doing it.

“Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next.
Delicious Ambiguity.”
